Everybody Loves Chris Tiu
SpottedBy JASER A. MARASIGANApril 4, 2012, 1:42pmMANILA, Philippines — Chris Tiu is anything but a stereotypical jock. His undeniable appeal cuts across age brackets and school affiliations. Aside from being a basketball heartthrob, he had been mostly admired by fans for his commitment to his sport and studies, and devotion to public service. After his stint in the national basketball team, where he was the team captain, the Student and Campuses Bulletin caught up with Chris in one of the stores of his latest business ventures, Hong Kong milk tea franchise Happy Lemon. Only a few minutes into the interview, in between sips of his favorite drink (Cocoa Milk Tea with Puff Cream), a group of high school girls approached our table, all giggly and excited to ask Chris for an autograph. Of course, Chris obliged, even spending some time chatting with them. “There are some things you never get used to and that’s one of them,” says Chris of the attention that he’s been getting even after his heydays playing for the Ateneo Blue Eagles. It’s been almost four years since Chris Tiu was in the UAAP spotlight, when he led the Blue Eagles to what is now is its four-peat championship reign. “I think that’s my market talaga, the youth. I guess it’s because of what I went through. I finished honors program in Ateneo, played for the school as team captain, and I got involved in a lot of social-civic activities. That was really how the image was portrayed, a student-athlete. I think that’s what parents encourage their kids to become. They use me as a role model, as an example, which of course, I actually don’t mind. And I’m very thankful that they speak highly of me. At least I’m able to use my platform positively to inspire them,” he continues. While almost everyone expected Chris to turn professional and go to the Philippine Basketall Association (PBA) after graduation, he managed to finish two major courses, Bachelor of Science in Management Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics and then decided to suit up instead for the RP team. He led his teammates to the semi-finals of the FIBA Asia Champions Cup. “Playing for the national team is the best experience ever. That’s what most pro players miss out on. Playing for the national team does not exactly pay a lot but for me, to be able to represent the 90 million Filipinos who really love the game of basketball, it’s a rare opportunity. It’s a blessing,” he enthuses. Although the team finished a little bit short of its goal, Chris believes that it was still a successful program over-all. “We really dedicated ourselves to win. Hopefully I’d be given another chance to try it out again. To wear that jersey, that’s not everybody can have. You can have a commercial jersey, but the Philippine jersey is rare,” he adds. JACK OF ALL TRADES Currently on break from basketball, it seems Chris is making the most out of the free time that he has. Aside from managing his own businesses, Chris also hosts the educational TV show “iBilib: Wonders of Horus” every Sunday night on GMA, where it features scientific experiments. “The show ‘iBilib’ is perfect for the youth. Parents can watch it together with their kids. We have experiments na akala mo magic but we explain the scientific logic behind it, how it actually happened. We explain the different concepts of Physics and Chemistry,” relates Chris, who is convinced that the show will get more kids interested in their Science subjects. Likewise, the show is open to students, who will request certain experiments to be performed on the show. “That’s the whole idea why I’m in the media. It’s to influence and share knowledge to people,” adds the World Vision ambassador. Chris hopes to host another show focusing on social entrepreneurship, something that he, himself, actively advocates. As an entrepreneur, Chris is best remembered by Ateneans for “Chinky Chicken”, the food stall business that he put up on campus when he was just a college student. ECO-WARRIOR More recently, Chris added another tag to his multi-hyphenated name — Eco-warrior. The environmental movement “Pilipinas Eco-warriors” uses social media as a channel to address environmental problems. Anyone can participate by taking photos or videos of environmental law violators, and sending them to the group’s website www.ecowarriors.ph. “What we want to do is to have a platform for all Filipinos to get involved, to be the eyes and ears of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Basically, we’re the watchdogs. If you see someone or an organization violating our environment, take a photo or a video, kasi lahat naman tayo may cellphones wherever we go, and post it on the webpage. We screen it and forward it to the DENR for them to take action,” he explains. Likewise, the group plans to go on campus tours to encourage students to join in the movement. HOMEBODY Although time for himself is hard to come by, Chris doesn’t mind it at all, who also busies himself with his Barangay Kagawad duties. He is now on his second term. “Wasted time makes me uneasy,” he admits. But on the rare occasions that he does have real free time, he spends it with the family, at home. Yes, at 26 years old, Chris still lives with his parents. “It’s practical to live with your family. You don’t have to pay rent, there’s always food, you don’t have to do your own laundry,” he said with a grin. “More than that, it’s really the formation that you get from the family, and the sense of security. Of course, sometimes you have disagreements, but I think the benefits outweigh it. It’s different with the family, when you come home, you have someone to share your stories with, to give you advice,” he adds. And when Chris is not at home, or out in meetings, or doing store checks, you can find him on the golf course. “If I don’t have time, I just play golf in the city. But if I have time, I go out of town. I play golf with my friends, sometimes my dad. My friend golfers are amateur champions. I like playing with better people so I get challenged. I join amateur tournaments every once in awhile for the raffles,” he says with a laugh. With all his talent and good fortune, one wonders if there’s anything Chris Tiu can’t do. “I can’t dance. But I can play the piano. That’s my hangout at home. When I play the piano, I usually play Broadway musicals, like ‘Phantom of the Opera’, ‘Les Miserables’, ‘Miss Saigon’. I can read notes but I can also play by ear. I also play songs by Jay Chou, my favorite,” he muses. (Spotted is a regular feature on campus personalities and young celebrities about their favorite hangout places.)
